Edinburgh Youth Orchestra will host two ensemble courses Easter 18-22 April 2019. The courses will focus on wind and string players – coached and directed by highly experienced orchestral musicians and coaches, Lawrence Gill and Claire Docherty. If you are aged 11-18 and play an orchestral instrument from grade 3 level and above, please get in touch and register. Due to substantial sponsorship the course are FREE and there are NO auditions!
This is a wonderful opportunity for young wind, brass, percussion and string players to work in ensembles, with coaching from professional orchestral musicians. There are no auditions to join the EYO Wind and String Ensembles and all applications will be accepted. At the heart of this exciting venture is the opportunity to develop individual and ensemble skills. There will be a wide variety of wind and string ensemble repertoire culminating in a sharing concert at the end of the course when family and friends can come along and enjoy a selection of pieces that have been rehearsed.
Edinburgh Youth Orchestra is delighted to welcome in new General Manager, Wendy Elliott.
Wendy studied piano at the RSAMD in Glasgow with Graeme McNaught, working with instrumentalists and singers, including Lisa Milne, Pat MacMahon and the Mansbridge String Quartet, before training as a Primary School teacher in London. She is now Principal Teacher in the Junior School at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh and is a parent of two members of the orchestra.
After almost 30 years as General Manager of EYO, Marjory Dougal has now retired from the Board of Trustees. During that time she has been the inspirational driving force behind the orchestra – without her, the orchestra would certainly not have flourished in the way it has. In recognition of the outstanding work she has done, the Trustees have asked her to become a Vice-President of the orchestra, and we are all delighted that Marjory will be continuing her connection with EYO in this way. Edinburgh Youth Orchestra wishes to thank conductor, Sian Edwards once again for her inspiration and steering the orchestra through rehearsals and three very well received concerts in Aberdeen at The Beach Ballroom and two concerts at Greyfriar’s Kirk in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We were delighted former EYO member Rhiannon Carmichael was able to return to perform as soloist in Weber Bassoon Concerto.
We are very grateful to Claire Mackie, who has recently resigned as a trustee and Chief Executive of the Orchestra, as she moves on to a new job. Claire has played a large part in the Orchestra’s recent successes, and we wish her all good fortune in her new career.
Following two successful concerts in Glasgow and Edinburgh congratulations to all our young players and tutors over the Easter course for all their hard work and commitment. Many thanks also to our conductor, James Lowe and soloist Julian Bliss for their immense contribution and musicianship – a real inspiration to all our young musicians.
We give a big welcome to our new Chairman David Elliott, Director of Music at George Watson’s College since August 2004. David has a long association with us and more recently as an EYO parent. In 1993, when he was Director of Music at The Latymer School in North London, his orchestra and choir took part in the Vienna International Festival of Youth and Music at the same time as the EYO and we shared a concert in the Esterházy Palace at Eisenstadt outside Vienna.
Freya Hall from Aberdeen has been a violinist with us for several years and we’re delighted she’ll be our 2018 Leader. She’s in her final year studying classics at Edinburgh University and has been a member of NYOS and many other ensembles. Welcome Freya!
Congratulations everyone on two triumphant concerts this week! Thank you to Sian Edwards, Lawrence Gill and Daniel Rodríguez Hart for joining us. We were delighted to welcome back Lourd, Tibah and Omar from the Palestine Youth Orchestra.
Thank you everyone for making EYO what it is, one of ‘Europe’s leading youth orchestras’ and we’re looking forward to seeing you all again for the 2018 season – watch this space!
The deadline for applications to the 2017 course was 31st March. Late applications for strings can still be accepted. Please apply now at www.edinburghyouthorchestra.org/join-us/.
