Andreas Theocharous

Andreas Theocharous is a tuba player born and raised in Limassol, Cyprus. He recently graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in the Tuba class of Andy Duncan (BBCSSO) and Anthony Swainson (Halle-BBCSSO).

Andreas started tuba lessons when he was 14 years old with trumpet player Andreas Giannakouras (Cyprus Symphony Orchestra). During the next few years, he graduated from Limassol Music High School with the highest marks of his year and he was principal tuba player in the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra where he performed Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto.

From 2012 until 2014 he served as sergeant at the Military Music Band of Cyprus National Guard and he collaborated with Cyprus Symphony Orchestra in various projects. In 2017, he collaborated with Scottish Opera and won the apprentice scheme to play side by side with musicians of the RSNO. That same year, he toured with Scottish Ballet across Scotland and England.

As a soloist, he has performed with the RCS Brass Ensembles and Wind Band. In 2018 he was highly commended as soloist at the final of the Governor’s Recital Competition for brass. He has also participated in masterclasses with tuba players such as Roland Szentpali, Sergio Carolino, Ben Thomson, Ryan Breen, Jonathan Gawn, Ewan Easton and has performed with various ensembles in the UK, France, Italy, Greece, Malta, Lebanon and Cyprus. Recently, he participated in a concert with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Andreas is a founding member of Spitha Brass, and Aura Brass Quintet, both formed while studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2016, Spitha Brass won the David James Recital Competition for chamber music and in 2017 Aura Brass won the same competition. Both ensembles are currently giving recitals and workshops across Scotland. In 2018, Aura Brass was highly commended at the final of the Governor’s Recital Competition for chamber music and given the chance to perform live on “Classics Unwrapped” on BBC Radio 3. Later this year, Aura Brass will play at the final of the prestigious Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition in Manchester

Andreas is planning to start his postgraduate degree at the RCS next year, focusing on orchestral playing and solo contemporary music. He is delighted to be invited to perform with Edinburgh Youth Orchestra in their 2019 Summer Season.
